Announce details of the first set of their 30th Anniversary releases.
On-U Sound Records have announced details of the first set of releases to celebrate their 30th anniversary.
African Head Charge release a new album, Voodoo Of The Godsent on Monday March 28th 2011. The 12-track album, produced and recorded by Adrian Sherwood at his studio in Ramsgate, is their first album release since 2005’s Visions Of A Psychedelic Africa.
2 weeks later on Monday April 11th the label releases 3 classic reissues - New Age Steppers eponymous debut, Creation Rebel’s highly influential Starship Africa and African Head Charge’s hard-to-find Off The Beaten Track. The remastered reissues will feature original tracklistings and artwork.
Formed in the early 80s by Adrian Sherwood and percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, African Head Charge have featured a revolving cast of members over the years. Their new album, Voodoo Of The Godsent, features the renowned Crispy Horns and Adamski on analogue synths.
Their 1986 recording, Off The Beaten Track, is widely regarded as a landmark recording and alongside Bonjo and Adrian features both Skip McDonald and Jah Wobble showcasing a more direct and fluid sound compared to their earlier releases. A combination of looped samples, chants and driving beats marked it out as one of the label’s finest and an album that set a standard to become widely emulated.
The New Age Steppers classic debut album also features in this first batch of reissues. The label’s first album release in January 1981 it featured a host of known and respected musicians – Ari Up, Mark Stewart from the Pop Group, Style Scott of the Roots Radics and a young Neneh Cherry. A single taken from the album, a cover of Junior Byles classic Fade Away, became an early underground hit for the label. Heavy and chaotic The New Age Steppers would go on to record another couple of albums for the label – Action Battlefield in 1982 and Foundation Steppers in 1983.
Creation Rebel’s Starship Africa was recorded in 1978 with Adrian Sherwood at the helm and a line-up including Charlie ‘Eskimo’ Fox, ‘Crucial’ Tony and Dr Pablo who went on to form the basis of one of On-U’s key in-house rhythm sections. Initially released on one of Sherwood’s previous labels, 4D Rhythms in 1980, the album would later be re-released to a far wider audience via On U Sound in 1982. A unique and other -worldly record the ambient washes of sound within its tight rhythmical parameters marked it out as being hugely individual.
The next new release and batch of reissues in the continuing programme to celebrate the anniversary are due in June and further releases are scheduled throughout the year.
The new releases planned include a collection of contemporary remixes of Lee Perry’s On-U Sound output, the long-awaited On-U produced Little Axe album and a New Age Steppers long-player - their first since Foundation Steppers in 1983 – featuring vocal contributions from the late Ari Up and Mark Stewart.
Amongst the classic reissues are albums from some of the label’s most acclaimed artists including Lee Perry, Dub Syndicate, Bim Sherman, Tackhead, Little Annie and Singers & Players.
