Adrian Sherwood spoke to Clash recently about his new album ahead of its London launch on Friday (July 13th).
British reggae has its own character, its own flavour. A true soundsystem legend, Adrian Sherwood has been exploring the infinite space of dub for more than three decades - and is showing no signs of slowing down.
New album 'Survival & Resistance' is a case in point. Due to be released on August 20th, the record finds Adrian Sherwood on blistering form fusing his experimental whims with a spiritual flair.
Chatting to ClashMusic recently, Adrian Sherwood revealed that the title was inspired by a book he encountered on the story of the Palestinian people. "I thought it was quite appropriate for our history to be honest with you" he said. "We haven’t had to bow down or anything. It’s actually quite relevant to think about Palestinians to be honest, and I thought it fitted in quite well with our crew. We've tried very hard not to bow down to doing rubbish and survival is the name of the game for everybody, isn’t it? It particularly fits in for the On-U Sound, I think, without sounding too crass".
Set to launch the album with a one off show at London's Village Underground on Friday (July 13th) Adrian Sherwood is seemingly planning something different. "Someone like me I’ve got to compete on a level where I’ve got a good live show" he argued, "and I’m operating on the basis now of a sound system where I’m cutting things with the likes of Digital Mystic, Congo Natty, Pinch... so I’ve got good rhythms that are suitable to drop in my set".
"I’m playing 60% of my own tunes all night, and the other ones... you know like the old sound systems where someone plays something that they can’t play back to you? That’s how I’m trying to operate. I’m using reverbs, delays and samplers, I’m doing like a live dub show".
